Food and wine
- The importance of wine to the
area has been previously mentioned,
however the bond between this beverage and politics
needs to be explained.
In the Middle Ages the council of Orvieto met to elect
the so called “vinyard wardens” who protected
the local vines which, more often than not, were planted
together with poplars, fruit trees, oaks and olive
trees.
Particularities of local cuisine include:
Truffles, the mysterious underground mushroom which
Teofrasto believed was created by Autumn thunderstorms.
Splendid extra virgin olive oil in some cases guaranteed
by DOP.
Cured meat products.
Cheeses, again many of which are protected DOP(denomination
of protected origin)
Restaurants: Orvieto’s
gastronomical tradition is conserved with quality
and care in the many restaurants found in the city.
There are no boring themes on the menus which propose
dishes such as “drunk chicken” with pasta,
dishes with pulses and those using local produce
Orvieto with taste(l’arca
dei sapori)-
Orvieto with taste is a national event
in collaboration with “slow food”. It
takes place on the second weekend of October and offers
the most prestigious gastronomical traditions of Italy.
The event follows routes through the city, stopping
at laboratories and suggestive sites to taste the
local cuisine offered.
