of Orvieto/2
After invasion by the Barbarians the city regained its
strategic importance as it was on the border of Byzantine
Italy. In was in the Middle Ages that the city took its
actual form and palaces, towers and churches were built.
In 1175 the city was given its independence by Pope
Adrian and was often involved in battles against Todi,Viterbo,Siena
and Perugia . Orvieto reached its height in power in
1300 when it succeeded in taking over Orbetello and
Talamone on the Tirreno coast.
