History
of Orvieto/3
It was between the XII and XIV centuries that the population
of the city was even more numerous than that of Rome reaching
30,000 inhabitants. The power of the free council was
undermined by an internal war between the Monaldeschi
and the Filippeschi.
These disputes weakened military and political power and
when Cardinal Albornoz made Orvieto his city in 1364 he
was met with little opposition.
After this Orvieto wassociated with many aristocrats
and returned under papal rule in 1450, becoming one
of the most important provinces and a favourite among
popes and cardinals. In the XVII and XVIII centuries
the city’s history is of no particular relevance
and after becoming a seat of the Apostolic Delegation
(1831) in 1860 it became part of the Italian Kingdom
